OH! Original Hyperbolic!
OH! Original Hyperbolic! images are made when I take a photograph of something I love, such as Brighton Pier, Brighton Pavilion, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, street art, florals or anything that inspires me.
I isolate a geometric section of the photo (triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, and then repeat and reflect that section so that it rotates around itself, becoming smaller in size with each rotation according to a mathematical algorithm. This process continues until the image makes itself into a circle of self-replicating reflections. It's like a remix of a favourite song, blissfully recognisable, but totally different and surprising.

I love the creative process of looking at the world with this process in mind. It reminds me of the old days when I would have to think differently about taking photographs because I had a black and white film in my camera (remember those days when we had actual film in a camera?). I used an SLR camera and it would be tricky to change the black and white film roll for a colour one, so I would try to shoot everything I needed in black and white before deciding to shoot in colour or slide again. This meant that I walked through the world imagining scenes in monotones. I love this feeling of augmented reality which is replicated digitally through the hyperbolic tiling process.
I now walk through the world imagining which features of my environment will look effective when tiled. The results are these images, which try to retain the essence of the subject, whilst at the same time disguising them beneath a geometric, fractalled veil.
I've used photographs of objects and places as well as people to create gorgeous, unusual gifts for friends since 2018. They have loved them so much that, in 2022, I produced a limited range of Christmas cards. They sold out and got rave responses from people, so I extended the range to include aspects of Brighton, a range of florals and bespoke images of local celebrities, couples, kids and family groups.
The only artwork I photograph that is not my own is street art that I find randomly on walks around ours or other towns and cities. Where I can find an artist's name, I will always credit the artist.
If I have used your artwork, please feel free to let me know what you think of it. I hope you will be happy for me to use your image in this way, but if not, just let me know and I will remove your image from my product range.
